    What are the university admissions requirements?
    Answer

    Applicants holding post-secondary or other qualifications from a Recognized Tertiary Institution in Hong Kong or overseas are welcome to apply to HKUST. In general, we expect applicants have already completed a sub-degree, or holding overseas post-secondary qualifications (including overseas sub-degree and sub-degree jointly offered by local and oversea institutions), or completed full-time first year study that leads to a Bachelor’s degree. Applicants must also satisfy the English Language requirement as set by the university. For details, please refer to here for further details.

    Do I need TOEFL or IELTS to gain admissions?
    Answer

    TOEFL and IELTS can serve as proof of English language proficiency, but these tests are not necessary if you meet the requirements with any other recognized qualifications such as IB English and GCE AS/AL English. For details, please visit here

    Does HKUST accept students for Spring Admissions?
    Answer

    Currently, HKUST does not offer Spring Admissions. All students shall start their term in fall term in September.

    How's the accreditation status of HKUST degrees?
    Answer

    HKUST degrees are well-recognized by many respected higher education institutions. For example, HKUST Business School has a double-accreditation status by EQUIS and AACSB while School of Engineering is accredited by the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand according to the Washington Accord. Since the establishment of the university, many of our graduates have gone to prestigious overseas institutions such as Yale, Princeton, UC Berkeley, UPENN, Cornell, Columbia etc. for their further studies.

    Am I a local or non-local applicant?
    Answer

    You are considered as a non-local student if you are a holder of the following documents issued by the Immigration Department of the HKSAR:

    - a student visa/entry permit; or 

    - a visa/entry permit under the Immigration Arrangement for Non-local Graduates; or 

    - a dependent visa/entry permit who were 18 years old or above when they were issued with such visa/entry permit by the Director of Immigration.

    Note: Education Bureau in November 2018 reviewed and redefined its definition of dependent visa/entry permit for non-local students, applicable to all applicants, as students holding dependent visa/entry permit who were 18 years old or above when they were issued with such visa/ entry permit by the Immigration Department of the HKSAR.
     

    If you are offered admissions into HKUST as a non-local student, you are required to pay tuition fees according to the fee schedule for non-local students.

    Does HKUST have any education agencies as their representatives?
    Answer

    HKUST does not encourage students to entrust their application to any third party agents. The university does not currently authorize any agency to act on its behalf.

    How do I apply to HKUST with post-secondary qualifications?

    You may submit your application through our online application system. More details about applying to us can be found on our post-secondary qualification admissions page.

  • Question
    Can I submit more than one application?
    Answer

    Applicants could submit only one application for undergraduate admissions to HKUST in each admissions year. On the application form, you can select up to two choices and the first choice will be considered as your highest priority. Depending on your program choice(s), you will be considered for your respective alternative choice(s) if you have indicated interest in application and are not admitted to your applied program(s). Research on the different admissions routes before selecting your program choices on your application form. Your program choice(s) and alternative program choice(s) (if applicable) will be final once you submit your application to the University.

    Can I submit my application after the deadline?
    Answer

    Due to the high demand in places and our limited admissions quota, we generally cannot accept applications after the deadline.

  • Question
    I can only begin my studies one or two years later, is it possible to defer my studies?
    Answer

    If you plan to study with us at a later time, we recommend you to apply for the admissions year when you could join HKUST.

    I am taking more than one curriculum. Should I include them all in the application?
    Answer

    Yes. If you have extra qualifications, you may include them in your application profile. It will supplement your application.

  • Question
    What should I write in my personal statement?
    Answer

    The personal statement is all about YOU. We expect to find in your personal statement your strength, your passion, your interest, your future goals, or any information you feel will be of interest to the selection panel. There is no restriction on your personal statement with regards to its format, content, length and etc.

    What is the application procedure for post-secondary / transfer students?
    Answer

    HKUST welcomes students from a wide range of backgrounds. You are welcome to apply to the university’s undergraduate programs with post-secondary qualifications. All applicants applying with post-secondary qualifications/university transfer should submit the same application form as applicants with Post-secondary Qualifications (include sub-degree) through Online Application System. In the application, you should provide information on the program/courses you are currently undertaking, including the most up-to-date transcripts and course descriptions. Please note however under the UGC guidelines, inter-universities transfer among UGC funded institutions are discouraged.

    What documents do I need to include in my application?
    Answer

    You are required to submit to HKUST your transcript(s) from the current post-secondary institution, public exam results, final high school transcript, personal statement and academic reference(s). We welcome you to submit any other supporting documents that you wish to be taken into consideration. For details, please visit here.

    I am taking more than one curriculum. Should I include them all in the application?

    Yes. If you have extra qualifications, you may include them in your application profile. It will supplement your application.

  • Question
    How do I create an account?
    Answer

    You must complete your application to HKUST by yourself, instead of through a third party. The personal information and email address you used to create your account will be carried to your application form automatically. Since we communicate with you mainly by email, do not share your email address with another applicant. Please note that you can submit only one application to HKUST for the same admissions year.

    When can I upload my personal statement onto the system?

    The Personal Statement should be uploaded before you submit your online application.

  • Question
    How do I know if my direct application has been successfully submitted to the University?
    Answer

    You will receive a HKUST Application Number to confirm receipt of your application through email. You may continue to upload additional documents to your account after submission of the application form. Keep your Application Number, as you will need to refer to this number in any and all future correspondence with HKUST.

    Can I apply for both early admissions and regular admissions?
    Answer

    If you apply in the early round and you have not received the results, you do not need to submit your application again. We will automatically consider your application for main round.

  • Question
    Should I mail my supporting documents to HKUST?
    Answer

    No. All documents, including transcript(s) from the current post-secondary institution, public exam results, final high school transcript, personal statement, academic reference(s) and all other supplementary documents are to be submitted online. It is not necessary to mail any document to HKUST unless requested.

    Can I still submit supporting documents after the deadline?
    Answer

    Supporting documents available at the point when the application is submitted should be uploaded to the system within two calendar weeks. Documents that are not yet available at the point when the application is submitted may be uploaded later. Please indicate the 'Expected Upload Date' in the Upload Documents Section. Please note that HKUST will only review applications with sufficient supporting documents.

    Why am I not able to upload my Personal Statement/supporting documents?
    Answer

    It is likely that you have exceeded the uploading file size limit or you have uploaded a file that is an unacceptable format. We suggest you shrinking the file size before uploading if the file size exceeds the limit. Click here for more advice on who to minimize your file size.

    I realize that my documents exceeded the uploading space limits. Can I get extra space?
    Answer

    You are originally given 6MB of uploading space. We recommend all applicants to try to adhere to this limit. If necessary, you may request for an increase in uploading space by contacting us with your full name and application number.

    What should I do if I do not have my documents/have not yet taken my exams when I submit my application?
    Answer

    It is possible for you to upload forthcoming supporting documents after submission of an application. If the document/exam results are forthcoming, please indicate the ‘Expected Upload Date’ in the Upload Documents Section.

    Do my documents need to be certified true copies?
    Answer

    We accept scanned copies of original documents for initial application evaluation. Certified true copies will only be required at the offer confirmation stage. If your official documents are not written in English or Chinese, you must also provide a full English translation prepared either by your high school or by an approved translation service provider.

    I would like to send an official transcript of my IB/SAT/AP/TOEFL/ACT. What is HKUST's institution code?
    Answer

    Please note that official reports are not necessary if you have your transcripts on hand, you can upload the report under the ‘Supporting Documents’ section and request the official report be sent from the test organization to HKUST. HKUST' s institution codes are as follows: IBO (IB Diploma) 00252, College Board (SAT, AP) 2787, ETS (TOEFL) 0170-00, ACT 6986.

  • Question
    Can I make changes to my application after I submit it?
    Answer

    Generally, you are expected to confirm all provided information are correct before submission. Information such as personal particular and program choice(s) cannot be changed once application has been submitted.  However, you may still provide additional information to support your application, including the following: 
    Provide marks/scores not yet available at the time of application; 
    Upload supporting documents; 
    Resend invitations to referees / add referees; and
    Update personal contact details.

    If I am offered admissions, am I still free to apply to other universities?
    Answer

    Yes. Your application to HKUST is independent from those to other universities. An offer of admissions (or conditional admissions) does not mean you are bound to join HKUST.

  • Question
    Will I get an invitation for an interview from HKUST?
    Answer

    An admissions interview may be arranged, but is not a mandatory procedure of the admissions exercise except for some programs. When you are invited for an interview, our colleagues will contact you on the arrangements via email.

    I got an interview invitation. What kind of questions should I expect?
    Answer

    An interview is a chance for the University and students to understand each other better. It is best to just be your true self. Wear a smile and stay relaxed. Show us that you can communicate well in English; that you are passionate about learning; that you are an independent thinker, who observes, thinks and makes suggestions, etc.

    How do I know the status of my application?
    Answer

    All application results are updated on the application system. You will receive an email notification when the application status is updated. We do not recommend contacting the admissions office for status update because our staff is only able to provide the same status as shown on the system.

    Will I receive multiple offers from HKUST?
    Answer

    You may like to know that all selected program choices are considered individually and decision outcome for each choice may be released at different time with different acceptance deadlines. Once an application result is available, we will send you an email notification to view the status update online via our online application system.

    Regardless of the ordering of your choices, if you are interested in studying the program you have been offered, you are encouraged to accept and pay the deposit online by the required deadline. An acceptance deposit is only required to be paid once for securing admissions place, if you are given offer for your other choice(s) later on, you are not required to pay another deposit again. Please note that the deposit serves as a main part of the process to secure your admissions place at HKUST.

    Can I re-prioritize my offered programs?
    Answer

    You may re-prioritize your offered programs during the acceptance period if you are given multiple offers. Kindly note that the priority of your program choices will be confirmed as final once you accept your offer online.

    What happens if I don't pay the deposit by deadline?
    Answer

    We will assume that you do not accept our offer and the place for admissions may be given to the next eligible candidate. Thus please be reminded of your deadline.

    Can I request for deposit refund?
    Answer

    The deposit can only be refund in the case where you could not meet the condition stated on your conditional offer. It is non-refundable in all circumstance.

    How much is the deposit?
    Answer

    The deposit will be HK$20,000 for international students, and HK$5,000 for local students. You are considered as a local student if it does not require you to apply for a student visa to study at HKUST. It can be paid online via Visa or MasterCard.

  • Question
    How do I accept my offer?
    Answer

    To ensure that your place is held, you are required to pay an acceptance deposit by the acceptance deadline. The deposit payment is non-refundable and non-transferable, and will be applied to the tuition fee for the Fall Term.

    What do I have to do after I accept my offer?
    Answer

    If you receive a firm offer from HKUST, you will be notified for the program registration date and time by early-July. If you receive a conditional offer, you should upload and submit the relevant documents (as instructed in the offer letter) as soon as possible after you have your final results. You will be notified of the program registration date and time after your conditional offer has been confirmed.

    How would I know whether or not I am awarded an admissions scholarship?
    Answer

    Normally, admissions scholarship offers are issued together with admissions offers. You may learn more on our Fees and Scholarships page.

    What are the requirements for student insurance? How do I purchase the student insurance?
    Answer

    The University has a group personal accident insurance policy for all students and non-local students MUST sign up for the Compulsory Medical Insurance Scheme. Further details can be found here.

    What documents should I bring to HKUST?
    Answer

    You should bring your admissions letter issued by HKUST, email or letter by HKUST confirming your student hall place, academic records, official transcripts and proof of tuition fee payment for registration.

    How do I open bank account in Hong Kong?
    Answer

    Three banks have branches on the HKUST campus: Bank of China (Hong Kong), Hang Seng Bank, and The Bank of East Asia. In general, when opening a new bank account, you need your passport / Travel document and the landing slip, HKUST Student Identity Card, proof of Hong Kong residential address (such as confirmation letter issued by the on-campus student hall, showing the hall address) and proof of permanent address.     Can I get advanced credit for my qualification?
    Answer

    Students holding certain qualifications, such as local sub-degree students, may be eligible for advanced credits granted at entry. For your reference, please refer to here for 2021 intake arrangement.

  • Question
    Can I apply for credit transfer? How do I know how many credits I can get?
    Answer

    HKUST recognizes that a number of applicants may have taken advanced courses prior to their admissions to university, eligible applicants may receive an admissions offer with credit transfer. For post-secondary applicants, you may be granted up to 60 credits which will count towards the 120 credits required for graduation. As HKUST assesses applications on a case by case basis, it is not possible to confirm the number of credit transfer at this point in time without reviewing your application.
